After our big ride North, there was an optional ride, but I chose to stay back and explore Helsingør. There were lots of cute churches and streets with quaint houses. Helsingør is also called Elsinore and it is the town where Hamlet was set. It was pretty cool that we got to see the castle where the story took place.
When we left Helsingør, we got on the ferry to cross over to Helsingborg in Sweden. We were able to ride right onto the ferry with our bikes. We spent the next while exploring the city. There was a cool castle with lots of stairs, and some fun shops that a few of us checked out. Then we set off and rode over 20 miles to the island of Ven, a quaint little town full of tiny cottages with charming gardens, small farms, docks in almost every yard, and beautiful nature. I would love to live in one of those cottage because I am a SUCKER for cutesy little houses and I’d love to keep some goats, chickens, and perhaps most importantly, bees.
We stayed in small cabins at a little camp ground on the island. It was pretty rustic but a fun change of pace from the city. A few folks went into town and got food for a picnic for dinner. While they were out, a few of us went for a walk down to the shore. Apparently, there used to be a lot of brick factories on Ven because the beach was full of bricks that had been weathered into the shape of rocks. When we were on the shore, I saw flies buzzing around something that was moving by the bushes. When I went to check it out, it turned out to be a little duckling that was tangled up in some prickly vines. I was able to untangle the little fella without touching them and as soon as they were free they ran off. I’m sure it’s not much in the grand scheme of things but it felt like a nice little thing to do.
