Exploring the City

Finley Heeb

On my first day in the city I was able to meet up with a few other folks from the program and they ran some errands with me to get my rail pass and SIM card. Afterwards, we walked around Christiania. It is a autonomous anarchist community in an old abandoned military base. After that, we went to the Kings Garden and Rosenborg Castle. It was very beautiful, and the garden was splendid, however, the pond was full of fish that just sat at the surface of the water with their mouths open and it kinda freaked me out.

The next afternoon, our program started so in the morning we went for a walk that started at the Nyhavn canal. From there, we walked to Amalienborg where we saw the homes of the royal family. There is a path along the water that took us to Gefion Fountain and St. Alban’s Church, which is right by Kastellet, a star shaped fortress surrounded by a picturesque moat.

Yesterday, we went for a fun bike tour, but because of weather we went in the evening. We made the most of our day by going to the botanical garden. there was an exquisite garden when we entered the park, but it only got better from there. We went to their butterfly house and palm house, a massive greenhouse conservatory. In the largest section there was even a tall spiral staircase that went to an upper level. Our 40 DKK admission to the garden got us into the Geological Museum for only 10 DKK. They had an amazing exhibit on fashion’s relationship with nature. It examined how nature has influenced clothing and accessories, for better or worse. There were a pair of earrings that had shiny bird heads and a dress with beetle shells sewn in that I thought were cool. The exhibit also had a lot of information about fashion sustainability, covering topics like pollution from dyes, fabrics made from plastics, and species decline from fur trades.
